Properties in Toomulla tend to be older builds — elevated timber and fibro homes, some dating back to the 1970s, alongside a smaller number of more recent block-and-tile constructions. The older homes have the character of original North Queensland beach houses: high ceilings, louvre windows and external timber stairs that creak under the weight of a fridge being carried down them. Moving Day in Toomulla
Toomulla jobs always have a bit of an expedition feel. We left the depot early and drove up the Bruce Highway for close to 40 minutes before turning off at Toomulla Beach Road. The property was an elevated timber home about three streets back from the beach on a big, treed block.
The house was two bedrooms plus a sunroom that had been converted into a third bedroom. All the furniture was solid — heavy timber bed frames, a claw-foot dining table and a cast-iron outdoor setting on the front verandah. The external stairs were narrow with a 90-degree turn at the bottom, so we rigged a blanket-padded slide rail on the stair edge to get the heavier items down safely.
Under the house was packed. Two old chest freezers, a tinnie on a trailer, stacks of crab pots, fishing gear, and a collection of timber offcuts the owner reckoned would come in handy one day. We loaded the trailer onto the back of our truck using the hydraulic ramp and stacked the rest around it.
The destination was a property in Rollingstone, about 15 minutes further north. Similar terrain, similar house style. The whole job ran just under seven hours including both legs of travel. Toomulla moves take longer than suburban jobs because of the distance, the older homes and the sheer volume of outdoor gear that people accumulate out here. But the quiet roads and no-fuss neighbours make the actual loading straightforward.
