Toolakea Beach Road leads down to a long, quiet stretch of coastline that rarely gets crowded, and most homes sit on generous lots with tropical gardens and established trees.
The housing stock in Toolakea is eclectic. You will find older fibro beach houses raised on stumps, solid block-and-tile homes from the 1990s, and newer builds with modern floor plans and large alfresco areas. The elevated homes require extra care when moving heavy items down steep external stairs, and the older builds sometimes have doorways that are narrower than current standard sizes.
Toolakea is spread along a relatively narrow strip between the highway and the coast. Streets run east-west between Toolakea Beach Road and the Bruce Highway, and most are quiet cul-de-sacs or loops with minimal through-traffic. Truck access is generally good, though a few of the beachfront properties have sandy access tracks that need caution in wet weather. Moving Day in Toolakea
This was a move from a highset fibro home on one of the back streets off Toolakea Beach Road. The owners had lived there for fifteen years and were relocating to a ground-level home in Bushland Beach to be closer to the grandkids. Three-bedroom house, full of solid timber furniture plus a good collection of fishing gear and outdoor equipment.
The house was raised about two metres on concrete stumps. The internal staircase was steep with a turn at the bottom, so our crew took the heavier items — a solid oak dining table, a queen ensemble and a tall bookcase — down the external back stairs instead. We wrapped the stair edges with blankets to protect both the furniture and the timber treads.
Under the house was the real surprise. Two chest freezers, a kayak, three fishing rod holders full of rods, tackle boxes, crab pots and about fifteen boxes of assorted gear. This took almost as long to load as the house itself. The kayak went on the truck roof rack and we used purpose-built rod tubes we keep on hand for exactly this type of coastal move.
The drive down to Bushland Beach was about 20 minutes on the highway. The new place was single-storey with a double garage — unloading was fast and simple. The whole job ran about five and a half hours. Toolakea moves always have that extra layer of outdoor gear that people accumulate when they live near the beach.
