The town has a pub, a primary school and not much else in the way of commercial services — that is exactly why people live here. Properties are large, often five acres or more, and the lifestyle is genuinely rural with cassowaries, wallabies and the occasional croc in the nearby creeks.
Housing in Rollingstone ranges from old timber farmhouses and original elevated builds to more recent rural residential homes on cleared blocks. Some properties are accessed via long private roads off the highway, and a few still rely on tank water and septic systems. The homes tend to be well-spaced with plenty of room around them, which gives our crew open space to work but also means longer carry distances from house to truck.
The Bruce Highway is the sole arterial route through Rollingstone, and all properties are accessed from roads branching off it. Highway traffic is generally manageable, though cane season brings extra heavy vehicle movements that our driver watches for during the trip up from Townsville. The side roads off the highway vary from well-maintained sealed surfaces to rough gravel tracks, and wet season can make some of the steeper access roads temporarily impassable.

Moving Day in Rollingstone
Rollingstone is the furthest we regularly go up the Northern Beaches corridor. This job was a four-bedroom homestead on about eight acres, set back roughly 300 metres from the highway on a gravel access road that ran through open paddock. The owners were retiring to a unit in Belgian Gardens — a genuine sea change in reverse.
The house was a classic North Queensland rural build: elevated timber, wide verandahs wrapping three sides, and louvre windows everywhere. The internal rooms were large with high ceilings, which meant the furniture was equally substantial — a king-size timber bed frame, a twelve-seater dining table, and a sideboard that took three of us to carry.
Outside, the shed was the size of a small warehouse. Ride-on mower, a quad bike, welding gear, fencing tools, and boxes upon boxes of accumulated rural life. We loaded the quad bike using the hydraulic ramp and strapped it down against the truck wall. The ride-on went on the ramp too.
The drive back to Townsville took about 50 minutes. The new unit in Belgian Gardens was a completely different world — compact rooms, narrow hallways, a single car park. We had to be selective about placement because the furniture was oversized for the space. The job ran close to eight hours, which is about standard for a large Rollingstone property. These moves are big and they are far, but our crew is set up for exactly this kind of work.
