Housing in Douglas varies significantly by location. The streets closest to JCU have a mix of student share houses, older lowset brick homes and modern townhouse developments purpose-built for the university market. Defence housing on the western side consists of well-maintained brick homes on standard blocks. The older residential pockets have larger homes on elevated blocks with established tropical gardens. Some properties on the higher ground near the JCU campus have sloped driveways and stepped access that requires careful truck positioning.
University Drive is the main access road into Douglas and carries heavy traffic during semester — particularly at the start and end of each semester when students are moving in or out. Stuart Drive connects Douglas to the wider road network and is the fastest route south to Kirwan and north to the CBD. Our drivers use Stuart Drive as the primary access point and avoid University Drive during peak times. The newer townhouse complexes near JCU have visitor parking areas that can accommodate our truck, but we confirm access with the body corporate before every university precinct move.

Moving Day in Douglas
Douglas has two peak seasons — February when JCU semester starts and November when it ends. This is a February move: a group of students moving into a four-bedroom share house near the campus. They have driven up from Brisbane with a trailer full of bedroom furniture, a car packed with boxes and nowhere near enough time to do it all themselves.
We meet them at the house at eight o'clock. The share house is a 1980s brick lowset on a slightly sloped block — the driveway drops away from the street but it is manageable for our truck. The front door opens straight into the living area with bedrooms off a side hallway.
Student moves are different from family moves. Each room gets a bed frame, a desk, a bookshelf and a stack of boxes. There is no dining table, no lounge suite — they will buy those from Marketplace over the next month. We unload the trailer and the car first, carrying items into each bedroom as directed. Then we bring in the items from our truck — a second-hand fridge from a Gumtree pick-up in Aitkenvale and a washing machine collected from a departing student in Cranbrook.
The whole job takes about two and a half hours. We set up the bed frames, position the desks and stack the boxes. The students are unpacked enough to make the walk to campus for orientation. For us, it is back up Stuart Drive to the next job — a Defence family in Vincent who are heading in the other direction.
