Balgal Beach is the furthest Northern Beaches community from Townsville, sitting about an hour's drive north along the Bruce Highway. The suburb is a genuine beachside settlement with a caravan park, a boat ramp and a handful of permanent residences clustered near the waterfront. People move to Balgal Beach because it is as far from the city as you can get while still being technically within the Townsville local government area.
Housing at Balgal Beach is modest and functional. You will find elevated fibro and timber homes built for the tropics, some older beach cabins and a scattering of newer builds on larger blocks. The homes are well-spaced with plenty of tree cover, and most have outdoor living areas that face the prevailing breeze. Furniture tends to be practical rather than delicate — solid outdoor settings, heavy timber beds and the kind of gear that can handle salt air and humidity.
Access to Balgal Beach involves a turn off the Bruce Highway onto Balgal Beach Road, which runs about three kilometres to the waterfront. The road is sealed and in reasonable condition, though some of the side streets closer to the beach are narrow with overhanging vegetation. Our trucks fit through comfortably, but drivers need to watch for low-hanging branches on some of the back streets near the foreshore.

Moving Day in Balgal Beach
This was the most remote move on our regular Northern Beaches run. We left the depot at 6am to get to Balgal Beach by 7am — an hour on the highway heading north past Rollingstone and then a left turn onto Balgal Beach Road. The property was a two-bedroom elevated timber home about 200 metres from the beach, surrounded by mature paperbark and mango trees.
The house was small but packed tight. The owners were a retired couple who had lived there for 20 years and were moving to a unit in Hermit Park to be closer to medical services. Every room was full, and under the house was stacked with crab pots, a dinghy, old furniture, garden tools and what must have been 30 years of accumulated bits and pieces.
Our two-person crew worked methodically. We started with the under-house gear, loaded the dinghy on the truck roof rack, and then moved through the house room by room. The stairs were external timber with no handrail on one side, so we set up our portable rail clamp for safety.
The drive back to Hermit Park took a solid hour. The new unit was compact and ground-level — a relief after the stairs at Balgal. We had to leave some items in the truck for a charity run because they simply would not fit in the smaller space. Total job was about seven hours including both drives. Balgal Beach moves are a commitment, but the lack of traffic and the straightforward loading make the work itself pleasant.
