Before the ferry moved to Nelly Bay, Picnic Bay was the island's main arrival point and commercial centre. Today it has a more subdued character — a handful of shops, the Picnic Bay Hotel, a golf course and a scattering of residential properties. The old jetty is now used for fishing and sunset walks rather than ferry departures.
Housing in Picnic Bay is a mix of older cottages, some dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, alongside renovated beach houses and a small number of newer builds. The older homes have low ceilings, narrow hallways and external stairs that show their age. Moving Day in Picnic Bay
Picnic Bay is the easiest of the Magnetic Island suburbs to access — just a couple of minutes from the Nelly Bay barge terminal and relatively flat compared to the hillside suburbs further north. This job was a two-bedroom cottage near the old jetty, and the owners were moving to a three-bedroom home in Currajong on the mainland.
We loaded the mainland side first — the Currajong house was ready for delivery, so we planned to cross to the island, load the Picnic Bay cottage, return on the barge and unload at Currajong in one continuous run.
The cottage was a classic 1960s island build — low ceilings, timber framing, louvre windows along every wall. The front door was narrow, so our crew took the couch and the fridge out through the side verandah door instead. The under-house area was low clearance — about 1.2 metres — so retrieving stored items meant crawling in and passing things out by hand.
The furniture was modest but solid. A retro dining setting, two bedroom suites and a collection of vintage pieces the owner had picked up at island markets over the years. We wrapped each piece individually because the older items were more susceptible to surface marks.
Loading took about three hours. The drive to the barge was two minutes, and we caught the 1pm crossing back to Townsville. The Currajong unload was straightforward — single-storey, double garage, wide halls. Total job was about seven hours. Picnic Bay is the most accessible island suburb for removals, and the flat terrain makes the physical work more manageable than the hillside properties in Arcadia.
