Nelly Bay is the main arrival point on Magnetic Island, home to the ferry terminal where the Sealink ferry docks after the 20-minute crossing from Townsville's Breakwater terminal. The suburb has the island's largest concentration of permanent residents, a small shopping village with an IGA supermarket and cafe strip, and a mix of holiday accommodation and residential properties spread across the hillside behind the beach.
Housing in Nelly Bay ranges from beachfront units and townhouse complexes near the marina to elevated homes on the hillside with views across Cleveland Bay to Townsville. The hillside properties are accessed via steep, winding roads like Mandalay Avenue and Gustav Street, where our smaller trucks are essential. Some driveways are single-lane with sharp switchbacks that a standard removal truck simply cannot navigate.
Every move to or from Magnetic Island starts with logistics. Vehicles need to be booked onto the Fantasea vehicle barge, which runs on a fixed timetable from the South Townsville terminal at Ross Creek. Our truck needs a barge booking for each crossing, and the move schedule is built around the barge departure and return times. We use smaller trucks on the island — the roads are narrow, steep and not designed for full-size removal vehicles.

Moving Day in Nelly Bay
Moving to Magnetic Island is a different job to anything on the mainland. This was a three-bedroom hillside home in Nelly Bay — the owners were relocating from a house in Cranbrook on the mainland.
We loaded the truck in Cranbrook starting at 6am. The customer's furniture was standard but we packed the truck with extra care because island roads jostle everything harder than sealed city streets. Every item was strapped, wedged and padded.
At 9am we drove the truck down to the Fantasea barge terminal at Ross Creek in South Townsville. The barge crossing takes about 25 minutes to Nelly Bay. Once we rolled off the barge, the real challenge started. The property was halfway up the hill on Mandalay Avenue — a steep road with tight curves and no guardrails in places.
We used our smaller truck specifically for this reason. Even so, the driveway required a three-point turn to position for unloading. The house had external stairs up to the main living level with a timber deck overlooking the bay. Every large item — fridge, washing machine, the queen bed ensemble — went up those stairs with two crew while the third unloaded from the truck below.
The whole job ran about eight hours including both barge crossings and the Cranbrook loading time. Island moves cost more because of the barge fees, the smaller truck capacity and the extra handling required on steep terrain. But the result — a home with that view over the bay — makes it worth the effort for the people who choose to live here.
