The hillside homes are the trickiest to move — access roads like Hayles Avenue and Endeavour Road are steep with hairpin turns, and some properties have 50 or more external stairs from the road to the front door. Moving Day in Arcadia
Arcadia moves are a test of fitness. This job was an elevated two-bedroom home on Hayles Avenue — about 60 stairs from the road to the front deck. The owners were moving off-island to a ground-floor unit in Hermit Park on the mainland.
We had the truck on the morning barge from South Townsville and rolled off at Nelly Bay just after 8am. The drive from the ferry terminal to Arcadia took about five minutes along the main island road. We parked at the base of the stairs on Hayles Avenue and assessed the carry.
Sixty stairs with two landings. The stairs were concrete with metal handrails, wide enough for two people side by side with a fridge between them. Our three-person crew set up a relay system — two on the stairs, one at the truck. Every item was wrapped at the top, carried down and loaded straight into the truck.
The house was compact but the owners had quality furniture — a solid timber dining table, a heavy entertainment unit and a collection of framed artwork that needed individual wrapping. The kitchen had a full-size fridge and a chest freezer, both of which required careful handling on the stairs.
Loading took about four hours because of the stair factor. A ground-level equivalent would have been two hours. The barge back to Townsville departed at 2pm, and we had the truck unloaded at the Hermit Park unit by 4pm. Total job was close to nine hours — a long day, but moving off Magnetic Island always involves more time and more physical effort than a mainland equivalent.

The number of stairs between the road and your front door directly affects crew size, time and cost. An accurate stair count helps us give you a realistic quote and send the right number of people.
Empty and defrost all freezers and fridges.
Heavy appliances being carried down steep stairs need to be as light as possible. Defrost fridges and freezers at least 24 hours before the move and dispose of perishable food before moving day.
Wrap fragile items yourself for extra protection.
The stair carry adds handling that ground-level moves do not have. Wrapping fragile items like glassware, ceramics and artwork yourself before the crew arrives provides an extra layer of protection.
Clear the stairway completely.
Remove pot plants, welcome mats, shoes and any obstacles from the stairs before our crew arrives. A clear stairway is safer for the crew carrying heavy furniture and faster for the overall move.
