Being at the end of the road means all truck traffic must travel the full length of the island from the Nelly Bay ferry terminal through Arcadia to reach Horseshoe Bay. The island road is sealed but narrow in places with speed restrictions and the occasional wallaby crossing. Moving Day in Horseshoe Bay
Horseshoe Bay is the last stop on Magnetic Island — as far from the mainland as you can get. This move was an older elevated beach house about 200 metres from the waterfront. The owners had lived there for 12 years and were relocating to a home in North Ward on the mainland to be closer to the hospital and their GP.
We caught the 7:30am barge with the truck and drove straight through to Horseshoe Bay, arriving about 8:15am. The house was on stumps about 1.5 metres off the ground with an external timber staircase. Three bedrooms, an open-plan living area and an enclosed back verandah the owners used as a second lounge.
The furniture had the character of a long-lived-in home — a well-worn leather couch, solid timber bookshelves loaded with paperbacks, a heavy dining table and a piano that immediately became the biggest challenge of the day. The piano took three of us using a purpose-built piano trolley down the external stairs, with blanket padding on every step.
Under the house was the beach gear — kayak, snorkelling equipment, a surfboard, fishing rods and a barbecue. We strapped the kayak and surfboard to the truck sides and boxed the smaller items.
The drive back to Nelly Bay took 12 minutes. We made the midday barge and drove to North Ward from the mainland terminal. Total job ran close to nine hours. Horseshoe Bay moves take time because of the distance, the island terrain and the character of the older homes, but the crew handled it smoothly.
