Its proximity to the barracks means Defence families make up a significant portion of the population, alongside long-term residents and families drawn by the affordable housing and central location. Vincent is practical and well-connected — Woolcock Street runs along the northern boundary providing quick access east and west, while Stuart Drive is a short drive to the south. The suburb has a community feel with its own primary school and easy walking access to the Riverway parklands.
Vincent's housing is predominantly 1970s and 1980s lowset brick and tile on flat blocks, similar to neighbouring Cranbrook and Gulliver. Block sizes are reasonable and most homes have single or double carports with room for a boat or caravan alongside. Some homes on the streets closest to Lavarack Barracks are Defence housing — well-maintained but with standard layouts that turn over frequently. A number of older elevated timber homes remain on the eastern edges, and a few newer builds have appeared on subdivided blocks.
Vincent has straightforward truck access on most streets. The grid layout means no dead ends or complicated turnarounds, and the flat terrain eliminates any driveway gradient issues. The only congestion point is the Woolcock Street corridor during peak hours, which our drivers avoid by approaching Vincent from the south via the residential streets connecting to Stuart Drive. Lavarack Barracks generates some military vehicle traffic on the southern boundary but this rarely affects the residential streets inside the suburb.

Moving Day in Vincent
Vincent moves often follow a familiar pattern — Defence family rotating out of a three-bedroom brick home and heading to the next posting. We arrive at seven to find the house already in parade-ground order. Every box is packed, sealed and labelled with the room name and a number. The beds are disassembled with the hardware in zip-lock bags taped to the frame. This is how military families move, and it makes our job significantly faster.
The house is a standard Vincent lowset — three bedrooms off a central hallway, open-plan kitchen and living area, single garage with the laundry. The truck heads south on Stuart Drive toward the highway — this family is heading to Townsville's southern suburbs, just across to Kirwan. The unload takes an hour and a half into an identical brick lowset. Beds reassembled, fridge positioned, boxes stacked in the right rooms. The family is settled by eleven o'clock and the house looks like they have lived there for months.
