Kelso sits at the southern end of Townsville's western growth corridor, right alongside the Bruce Highway interchange that connects the city to Ayr, Ingham and points south. The suburb is popular with families looking for affordable homes on decent-sized blocks, and with workers who commute south to the Burdekin or north into Townsville's commercial precincts. Kelso has its own primary school, local shops and a strong community sports presence through the nearby Ross River Dam recreation area. It is a no-frills suburb where people come for the value, the space and the easy highway access.
The housing stock in Kelso is a mix of older fibro and timber homes from the 1980s, brick-and-tile builds from the 1990s and newer rendered block homes in the more recent estate stages. Block sizes are generous — often 800 square metres or more — and most properties have either double garages or large carports. The older homes tend to be high-set with steep front stairs and enclosed underneath areas used for storage and laundry. Newer homes are ground-level with standard double-garage access.
Kelso Drive connects the suburb to Thuringowa Central and Kirwan, while the Bruce Highway interchange provides quick access south. Our trucks enter from Kelso Drive or directly off the highway. Internal streets are wide and flat, with good kerb access throughout the newer estates. The older sections closer to the highway have slightly narrower streets, but nothing that causes issues for our removal vehicles. The main consideration is timing around the highway interchange during peak afternoon traffic when trucks heading south bank up at the roundabout.

Moving Day in Kelso
Kelso jobs start early — we try to get on-site by seven before the highway interchange traffic picks up. Our truck pulls off the Bruce Highway or comes down Kelso Drive and parks right outside the property. The crew walks through the house first, tags fragile items and works out the best loading order.
The older high-set homes near the highway are the ones that take a bit more time. Steep front stairs, narrow landings and understorey areas packed with storage boxes and tools that all need to come out. We bring stair trolleys and extra blankets for these jobs. The newer ground-level homes are much quicker — straight out through the garage, up the ramp and into the truck.
A 3-bedroom high-set in Kelso takes about three and a half to four hours with a two-person crew. Ground-level homes are closer to three hours. We load heavy items first, boxes tight against the walls, and strap everything down before we move. The drive from Kelso to most Townsville suburbs is fifteen to twenty minutes. If you are in one of the older high-set homes, the enclosed area underneath is usually packed with tools, bikes and storage. Sort through this a few days before the move so our crew is not spending time on items you do not plan to take.
Plan your move start around highway traffic.
The Bruce Highway interchange at Kelso gets busy between 7:30am and 8:30am and again from 4pm to 5:30pm. Starting before seven or after nine keeps the run smooth, especially if your new home is south of Townsville.
Measure doorways in older homes.
Some of the older Kelso homes have narrower doorframes than modern builds. If you have large furniture — king beds, L-shaped lounges — measure the doorways and let us know so we can plan for dismantling if needed.
