Moving Day in Alligator Creek
Alligator Creek sits about 25 minutes south of Townsville along the Flinders Highway. We turned off onto Alligator Creek Road and drove another five minutes to reach the property — a five-acre block with a four-bedroom homestead, a large Colorbond shed and a separate stable block.
The owners were relocating to a property in Kelso, closer to the kids' schools. The house was a solid rendered block home with wide hallways and sliding doors to the back patio, which made loading efficient. The furniture was robust — a king suite in Tasmanian oak, a large dining setting and a leather sectional lounge that had to come out through the patio doors.
The shed was where the real work started. A full workshop including a drill press bolted to a bench, hand tools covering every wall, welding equipment, an air compressor and about twenty boxes of parts and supplies. We unbolted the drill press, wrapped the welding gear in heavy blankets and used the hydraulic ramp to load the compressor.
The stable block had horse gear — saddles, feed bins, a mounting block and various tack. We use clean blankets for saddles to prevent scratching the leather. The total load filled a large truck to about 80 per cent capacity.
The run to Kelso was about 20 minutes. The new property had a wide driveway and flat yard — unloading was straightforward. The whole job ran about seven hours. Alligator Creek moves are meaty jobs but the open properties and good road access make the work manageable.
