Belgian Gardens sits between the base of Castle Hill and the northern end of The Strand, giving residents the best of both worlds — hillside tranquillity and beach access within walking distance. It is a quietly desirable suburb that does not get the same attention as North Ward but offers similar character homes at slightly less eye-watering prices. The streets are leafy and established, with a strong community of long-term residents alongside younger families moving in as older owners downsize. The Strand bike path runs right past the eastern edge, the Tobruk Memorial Baths are just down the road, and Castle Hill walking tracks start at the end of several streets. It is the kind of suburb where neighbours actually know each other and kids ride bikes to school.

The housing stock is a genuine mix — 1950s fibro cottages alongside beautifully restored Queenslanders, solid 1970s brick homes and the occasional modern build squeezed onto a subdivided block. The streets closest to Castle Hill tend to slope, and some properties on the western side sit on elevated blocks with retaining walls and steps. Moves here range from straightforward ground-level cottage relocations to more complex jobs involving raised Queenslanders with steep access. The suburb is compact enough that most homes are on standard residential blocks, but the variety in house styles means no two moves are the same.

Access in Belgian Gardens is generally good — streets are wide enough for a large truck on most routes, and the flat eastern side near The Strand is straightforward. The western streets climbing toward Castle Hill get tighter and steeper, and some dead-end cul-de-sacs require careful reversing. We approach from The Strand end via the Esplanade for the flatter properties and from Gregory Street for the hillside ones. Street parking is rarely an issue outside of Strand event days. The main watch-out is the overhanging mango and poinciana trees that line several streets — low branches can catch the top of a truck if the driver is not paying attention, and our blokes know which streets to approach with care.
