Moving interstate from Queensland is a different exercise depending on which corridor you travel. A Cairns to Sydney move crosses 2,400 kilometres and takes the better part of a working week in transit. A Brisbane to Sydney run is a third of that distance and can be done in two to three days. The pricing model, route hazards, booking lead time and seasonal risks all shift with the corridor. This is the 2026 guide to the four interstate routes R2G runs most often from its Cairns and Brisbane depots.
How interstate removalist pricing works
Local moves are quoted by the hour. Interstate moves are quoted by volume, measured in cubic metres of household goods, because the truck is committed to a long-haul run rather than an hourly job. A one-bedroom flat is roughly 15 to 20 cubic metres. A standard three-bedroom house is 35 to 50. The two service models are backloading, where your consignment shares a truck with other shipments running the same corridor, and dedicated transport, where the truck carries only your goods. Backloading is the economical default for most household moves. Dedicated transport costs more but compresses the transit window.
Cairns to Brisbane: 1,700km down the Bruce Highway
The Cairns to Brisbane corridor is the most-quoted interstate route in Queensland, and R2G runs it weekly between the Cairns City and Archerfield depots. The drive is 1,700 kilometres down the Bruce Highway through Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Backloaded transit is four to five days, because National Heavy Vehicle Regulator fatigue rules require overnight rest breaks. The defining seasonal risk is the wet season: between November and April the Bruce Highway around Cardwell, Tully and Ingham is prone to flooding that has closed the corridor for days at a time. A reputable operator builds a contingency window into wet-season quotes.
Brisbane to Cairns: the same road, a different move
The reverse route covers the same 1,700 kilometres, but the move itself differs in character. Brisbane to Cairns is increasingly a lifestyle or career relocation, often a family heading north, and the volume profile tends to be larger because people are moving into a house rather than out of an apartment. The transit window is the same four to five days. The practical difference is at the destination: Cairns is a smaller market, storage in Cairns fills faster, and the tropical climate means anything humidity-sensitive needs the right wrapping for the final leg.
Cairns to Sydney: the long haul, 2,400km
Cairns to Sydney is the long-haul route, 2,400 kilometres down the Bruce Highway to Brisbane and then south on the Pacific Highway through the Northern Rivers, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle. Backloaded transit runs seven to eight days. This route demands the longest planning runway, ten to fourteen weeks end to end once you factor in property settlement at both ends. It is the route where backloading economics matter most, because a dedicated truck for 2,400 kilometres is expensive, and where flexibility on the delivery window pays off.
Brisbane to Sydney: Australia's busiest interstate corridor
Brisbane to Sydney is 950 kilometres on the Pacific Highway and the highest-volume interstate moving corridor in the country. The Pacific Highway has been progressively upgraded to dual carriageway along almost its entire length, so transit is quick: two to three days backloaded. Because the corridor is so busy, backload availability is excellent and you rarely wait long for a truck. Demand peaks around the end of the year as university students relocate, so book six to eight weeks ahead if your move lands in that window.
Planning an interstate move from Queensland
Lead times scale with distance. Brisbane to Sydney needs six to eight weeks. Cairns to Brisbane or Brisbane to Cairns needs eight to twelve. Cairns to Sydney needs ten to fourteen. In every case the sequence is the same: lock the removalist with a deposit first, then work backwards through packing, utility transfers and address changes. Our interstate moving guide has the full timeline. If there is a gap between settling at one end and the other, storage in Brisbane or Cairns bridges it.
