Most moves from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands are done in a single day: load in Cairns in the morning, drive up the range, and unload in Mareeba, Atherton, Yungaburra or Malanda the same afternoon. What decides how that day goes is which range road suits your destination, the weather on the day, and the access at the Tablelands end, which is often a long driveway, a gravel road or an acreage block rather than a suburban kerb. Good removalists for the Atherton Tablelands will ask about all three before they give you a time.
Key takeaways
A house move from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands is usually loaded, driven and unloaded in one day. The Kuranda Range Road (Kennedy Highway) is the direct climb towards Kuranda and Mareeba, while the Gillies Range Road from Gordonvale is the direct climb to Yungaburra and Atherton. Transport and Main Roads lists a 19 metre semi-trailer as the longest vehicle permitted on Kuranda Range Road, so a standard removal truck is well inside the limit. Queensland's cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and heavy rain can close range roads at short notice, so wet season moves need a backup date. Long driveways, unsealed roads and steep acreage blocks at the Tablelands end add time, so describe the access when you book.
How does a move from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands run on the day?
It looks a lot like a local move with a longer drive in the middle. The crew arrives early at the Cairns end, usually around 07:00, and wraps the furniture in blankets, shrink wraps the lounge, bags the mattresses and loads the truck room by room. A three-bedroom house in Edge Hill or Redlynch is a solid morning's work for a two-person or three-person crew, and a high-set house with a long staircase in Manunda or Whitfield takes longer again.
Then the drive. Depending on where you are heading, the truck climbs either the Kuranda Range or the Gillies Range, and the travel time sits between the load and the unload in the plan. Unloading at the other end is the load in reverse, finishing with beds set up and boxes in the right rooms. Our crews run this kind of job out of the Cairns City depot, and the planning questions below are the ones we work through with every Tablelands booking.
Which range road should the removal truck take to the Tablelands?
It depends on where on the Tablelands you are going. The Kuranda Range Road is the Kennedy Highway between Smithfield and Kuranda, and it is the natural route for Kuranda, Mareeba, Tolga and the northern Tablelands. Transport and Main Roads describes it on its Kuranda Range Road upgrade page as a narrow road in places that has been through a long run of repairs since Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023, and its upgrade strategy names a 19 metre semi-trailer as the maximum vehicle length permitted on the road.
The Gillies Range Road climbs from Gordonvale, south of Cairns, to Atherton. The Queensland Reconstruction Authority describes it as a 56 kilometre road between Gordonvale and Atherton with steep sections through World Heritage rainforest, and it was fully reopened in early October 2024 after Jasper damage. For Yungaburra, Lake Eacham, Malanda and the southern side of Atherton, it is often the more direct climb. It is a tight, winding road, so a loaded truck takes it steadily.
There is also the Palmerston Highway from Innisfail up to Millaa Millaa, which can make sense for Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe or a household coming from the southern end of the region. The crew picks the route on the day based on the destination, the truck and the road conditions, not on what the map app says is two minutes quicker.
Is a removal truck allowed on the Kuranda and Gillies ranges?
Yes. The body trucks used on most house moves, from a smaller truck for a unit up to a larger truck for a family home, are rigid trucks well inside the length limit TMR sets for Kuranda Range Road. What matters more than the rules is how the truck is driven and loaded. A range climb with a full load needs the heaviest, squarest items low and forward, everything strapped tight, and no loose boxes on top that can shift on a hairpin.
Conditions can change during repair works. Lane closures, traffic control and temporary restrictions have been part of range travel since Jasper, and TMR lists further reconstruction on Gillies Range Road running towards mid-2027, site and weather permitting. Check QLDTraffic road conditions the night before and the morning of the move, and expect your removalist to do the same.
What time of year is easiest for a move up to the Tablelands?
The dry season, roughly May to October, is the easiest window for a range move. Get Ready Queensland's cyclone season guidance says Queensland's cyclone season officially runs from 1 November to 30 April, and the same months bring the heavy rain that causes landslips, fallen trees and short-notice closures on the range roads. Plenty of families still move in the wet season. They just plan with a backup date and do not stack the lease end, the move and the start of a new job onto the same day.
Tablelands weather is also its own thing. It is cooler and often damper than Cairns, mist can sit on the range in the early morning, and a fine day on the coast can be drizzle in Malanda. We cover the wider planning in our guide to moving during cyclone season, including what to do if a storm forecast lands in the week of your move.
Leave a buffer around settlement and lease dates
On a Tablelands move booked between November and April, try not to have your Cairns lease end, your Tablelands settlement and the move all on the same day. A one or two day buffer either side gives the crew room to shift the move if a range road closes, without you paying for a hotel or losing your new keys.
What access problems slow down a move at the Tablelands end?
This is where Tablelands moves differ most from a Cairns suburb job. Plenty of properties around Atherton, Tolga, Kairi and Mareeba sit on acreage with a long driveway, a gate or two, a cattle grid or a steep approach. The Tablelands Regional Council roads page says its local network includes more than a thousand kilometres of unsealed roads, so a gravel last stretch is common, and after rain it can be soft enough that a loaded truck should not go down it.
Tell your removalist about any of the following when you book, not on the morning:
- A driveway longer than a normal suburban block, or one with a sharp turn or steep grade
- Gravel, dirt or grass access that turns soft after rain
- Low branches, power lines or a carport the truck has to clear
- Gates, cattle grids or a causeway that floods in heavy rain
- Stairs at the house, including high-set Queenslander-style homes
None of these stop a move. They change the plan. A crew might park at the road and use dollies for a longer carry, or a smaller truck might shuttle from a larger one if the driveway will not take a big body truck. A few photos of the driveway and gate sent with the quote save a lot of guessing.
How should you pack for a range road move?
Pack as if the boxes will be shaken, because on a winding climb they will be. Fill cartons right to the top so they do not crush, keep book boxes small, tape the bases properly, and wrap glassware and plates in paper rather than tea towels. Wardrobe cartons keep hanging clothes off the floor of the truck, and mattress bags keep the damp out on a misty Tablelands afternoon.
Some things should ride in your car instead: documents, keys, medication, jewellery, laptops, and whatever the kids and pets need for the day. Drain fuel from the mower and whipper snipper, because fuel and gas bottles are dangerous goods on a removal truck. If you would rather hand the whole lot over, our Cairns packing team can pack the house the day before the crew loads.
“The range itself is rarely the problem. It is the soft driveway at the other end after a week of rain, or a carport roof nobody mentioned. Send us a photo of the access and we can plan the truck around it.”

What if your Tablelands place is not ready on moving day?
It happens often, especially with rural settlements, owner-builder homes and tenancies that do not line up. The usual answer is to load in Cairns, hold the furniture in storage, and deliver up the range once the new place is ready. Because everything is loaded once and unloaded once, it is also less handling than moving into a temporary rental and then moving again.
For a gap like this, storage in Cairns keeps the load close to the depot until the keys are ready. The Far North climate is hard on stored furniture, and our guide to storing furniture in a humid climate covers how to keep mould off timber, fabric and mattresses while they wait. R2G carries comprehensive public liability and goods-in-transit insurance, and it is worth asking any removalist how goods are covered while in storage as well as on the road.
What changes the time and cost of a Cairns to Tablelands move?
Every Tablelands move is quoted on its own details, and the things that move the number are the same ones that move the hours: how much you are moving, the access at both ends, which range the truck takes, the drive time between the two addresses, and whether the crew is packing as well as loading. A unit in Cairns North going to a house in Mareeba is a very different day from a four-bedroom acreage home going from Smithfield to Malanda. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take removalists to move from Cairns to the Atherton Tablelands?
Most Cairns to Atherton Tablelands moves are done in one day. The crew loads in Cairns in the morning, drives up the Kuranda or Gillies range, and unloads the same afternoon. The total time depends on the size of the home, the stairs and carry distance at both ends, which range is used, and road conditions on the day, including any repair works or wet weather.
Can a removal truck use the Kuranda Range Road?
Yes. Transport and Main Roads lists a 19 metre semi-trailer as the longest vehicle permitted on Kuranda Range Road, which is the Kennedy Highway between Smithfield and Kuranda. The rigid body trucks used on most house moves are well inside that limit. Conditions can change during repair works or after heavy rain, so check QLDTraffic before the move.
Is it better to take the Kuranda Range or the Gillies Range to Atherton?
It depends on where you are going. The Kuranda Range suits Kuranda, Mareeba and the northern Tablelands. The Gillies Range Road from Gordonvale is usually more direct for Yungaburra, Lake Eacham, Malanda and southern Atherton. Your removalist should pick the route on the day based on the destination, the truck and current road conditions.
Should I avoid moving to the Tablelands in the wet season?
You do not have to avoid it, but plan for it. Queensland's cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and heavy rain in those months can close range roads and soften unsealed driveways. Keep a backup date, avoid stacking lease end and settlement on the same day as the move, and keep a few days of essentials in the car.
