Booking Brisbane to Townsville removalists comes down to three stages: a full load day at the Brisbane end, a long run up the Bruce Highway, and a delivery window at the Townsville end that you agree on before the truck leaves. The things that actually change the plan are how much you own, whether you share a truck or book one outright, and the weather north of Rockhampton.
Key takeaways
A Brisbane to Townsville house move is a long-distance job run in three parts: loading in Brisbane, linehaul up the Bruce Highway, and delivery in Townsville. A dedicated truck gives a fixed delivery day, while a shared or backloaded truck is usually more flexible on dates and slower to arrive. Brisbane sits inside Queensland's fire ant biosecurity zones, so potted plants, soil and mulch need checking against the zone rules before they go on the truck. Queensland's official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, so moves in those months need slack built in. A Queensland driver licence holder must update their address with Transport and Main Roads within 14 days of moving.
How does a Brisbane to Townsville move actually run?
Day one is the load. A two-person or three-person crew wraps the furniture in blankets, shrink wraps the lounge, bags the mattresses and loads the truck room by room, heaviest and squarest pieces first. On a typical three-bedroom house in Carindale or Ashgrove that is a full day, and a Queenslander with a long rear staircase in Paddington or Red Hill takes longer again.
Then the linehaul. The truck heads north, usually early to clear the Bruce Highway past Caboolture before the morning traffic builds, and works up through Gympie, Maryborough, Rockhampton and Mackay. Heavy vehicle drivers work to fatigue rules, so a long run like this is planned across more than one driving day rather than pushed through overnight. Delivery is the load in reverse.
Coming the other way instead? The planning is much the same, and the detail for that direction sits on our Townsville to Brisbane run page.
Should you book a dedicated truck or share one up the Bruce Highway?
This is the biggest decision on the job, and it drives everything else. A dedicated truck carries only your load, leaves when it is full and goes straight to your new address, so the delivery day is fixed. A shared load, often called backloading, puts your furniture on a truck that is already heading north with other customers' goods. It can suit a smaller load or a flexible date, but delivery depends on the other stops.
Neither suits everyone. A family relocating for a job that starts on a set Monday, or a Defence household with a posting date at Lavarack Barracks, usually needs the certainty of a dedicated truck. A single person moving a one-bedroom unit from Toowong with no fixed start date can often live with a wider delivery window. We have written up the trade-offs in more depth in backloading versus a dedicated truck, including what to ask about transfers between trucks.
How far ahead should you book removalists for Brisbane to Townsville?
Earlier than you would for a local move. A long-distance truck is tied up for several days on a single job, so availability is tighter, especially at the end of the month when leases roll over, in the school holidays, and over summer when many families time a move around the new school year. In our experience, booking several weeks ahead rather than several days ahead is what gets you the date you want.
Get the quote on a proper inventory, not a guess. A removalist who has seen the house, in person or on a video walk-through, can size the truck properly, whether that is a four-tonne body truck for a small unit or a larger truck or taut-liner for a full family home. Mention the access at both ends up front: stairs, a steep driveway, a long carry to the kerb, or a lift booking in a North Ward or Townsville CBD apartment building.
What should you pack differently for a long-distance Queensland move?
A load that travels for days gets far more vibration than a run across the river from Bulimba to New Farm. Pack boxes full and firm so they do not crush, tape the bottoms properly and keep book cartons small. Fragile items need proper paper and padding, not a towel thrown over the top. A few items should never go on the truck at all:
- Passports, birth certificates, property settlement papers and the keys to the new place
- Jewellery, cash, laptops, hard drives and anything irreplaceable
- Prescription medication and whatever the kids and pets need for the drive
- Gas bottles, fuel, paint thinners, pool chemicals and other dangerous goods
- Perishable food from the fridge and freezer
Everything on that list rides with you in the car or is dealt with beforehand. Empty and defrost the fridge the day before, and drain the washing machine. If you would rather not do the packing yourself, our Brisbane packing team can pack the whole house the day before the load so the crew walks into a home that is ready to go.
Can you take pot plants and garden gear from Brisbane to Townsville?
Often yes, but check the fire ant rules first. Much of South East Queensland, including large parts of Brisbane, sits inside the fire ant biosecurity zones, and the rules cover soil, mulch, turf, hay, manure and potted plants moving out of those zones. The National Fire Ant Eradication Program's guide to managing potted plants says potted plants can only leave a property in the zones if they have been treated and stored the prescribed way, or bare-rooted and repotted at the destination, or moved within 24 hours of arriving. Without one of those, you need a biosecurity instrument permit.
Check both addresses on the fire ant map
The fire ant biosecurity zones are reviewed every month, so do not rely on last year's suburb list. Put your Brisbane address into the interactive map on the National Fire Ant Eradication Program website a few weeks before the move. If your property is inside a zone, sort out treatment, bare-rooting or a permit for your potted plants before the crew arrives, and leave bags of potting mix, soil and mulch behind.
Garden furniture, the mower and the trampoline still go, but clean the dirt off first. A crew loading at 07:00 in Wynnum or Springfield Lakes will happily take a hosed-down mower, not one with soil packed under the deck. Drain the fuel from mowers, whipper snippers and outboards too, because fuel is a dangerous good on a removal truck.
How does the wet season change a move to Townsville?
A lot, if you plan for it. Get Ready Queensland's cyclone and storm surge guidance says Queensland's cyclone season officially runs from 1 November to 30 April, and that communities within 50 kilometres of the coast from Bundaberg to Thursday Island are the most susceptible. Townsville sits inside that band, and much of the Bruce Highway north of Bundaberg runs close to the same coast. Heavy rain can close low-lying sections of the highway at short notice, and a truck cannot drive through floodwater any more than a car can.
None of that means you cannot move in summer. It means building in slack. Do not book your rental exit, the new lease start and the delivery all on the same day, and keep a few days of clothes, bedding and kitchen basics in the car in case the truck is held south of a closure. Check QLDTraffic road conditions before you leave Brisbane and again each morning of your own drive.
“The truck is rarely what slows a northern move down. It is the paperwork and the weather. Get the settlement dates and the keys lined up, leave a day or two either side for the Bruce Highway, and the rest of the job is just careful loading.”

What happens on delivery day in Townsville?

Delivery runs on the window you agreed when you booked. You get a call ahead of time, and someone needs to be at the new place with the keys. Townsville heat is real for most of the year, so an early start suits everyone. A full house unload in Kirwan or Douglas on a February afternoon is hard going for everyone.
Label every box with the room it belongs in, and stick a matching sign on each door at the new place, so the crew can put boxes straight where they belong. Check the inventory as items come off, and note any damage on the paperwork before the crew leaves rather than a week later. Need a hand at the Townsville end with unpacking or a second drop? What if your Brisbane settlement and Townsville move-in dates do not line up?
It happens on plenty of northern moves. The Brisbane sale settles on a Friday and the Townsville house is not ready for a while yet, or one lease ends before the next starts. The usual answer is to load as normal and hold the furniture in storage until the new place is ready, then deliver from there.
For a gap at the Brisbane end, storage in Brisbane out of our Archerfield depot lets the load go in once and come out when the Townsville keys are in your hand. R2G carries comprehensive public liability and goods-in-transit insurance, and it is worth asking any removalist how goods are covered while they sit in storage as well as on the road.
What admin should you sort before you leave Brisbane?
Because this is a move within Queensland, there is no change of vehicle registration state and no licence transfer, which saves a lot of the paperwork that comes with an interstate move. You do still need to update your address. Transport and Main Roads says Queensland licence holders must tell TMR within 14 days if they change address, and that one update flows through to the vehicle registrations in your name.
Beyond that, the usual list applies: power and internet connected in Townsville before you arrive, mail redirection, the bank, the electoral roll and the kids' new school. Book the power connection early, because nobody wants a first Townsville night without a fan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take removalists to get from Brisbane to Townsville?
A dedicated truck usually spends more than one day on the road between Brisbane and Townsville, because heavy vehicle drivers work to fatigue rules and the Bruce Highway is a long run. Add a load day at the start and a delivery day at the end. A shared or backloaded truck can take longer, depending on its other stops along the way.
Is moving from Brisbane to Townsville an interstate move?
No. Brisbane and Townsville are both in Queensland, so it is a long-distance intrastate move. You keep your Queensland vehicle registration and driver licence, and only need to update your address with Transport and Main Roads within 14 days. The removal itself is still planned like a long-distance job, with a separate load day, highway travel time and an agreed delivery window.
Can I drive my own car while the removalists take the furniture?
Yes, and most families do exactly that. Plan your drive so you reach Townsville before the truck, with the keys collected and the power connected. Carry valuables, documents, medication and a few days of clothes and bedding in the car. Check QLDTraffic before you set off each morning, particularly between November and April, when heavy rain can close parts of the Bruce Highway.
What is the cheapest way to move from Brisbane to Townsville?
The cheapest approach is usually to move less. Sell or donate what you will not use before the quote, and the truck size and loading time come down. A shared or backloaded truck can cost less than a dedicated one if your dates are flexible. Packing yourself, labelling clearly and having boxes stacked by the door also cuts the time the crew spends on site.
